JNTU B.Tech II MECHANICS OF SOLIDS AND MECHANICS OF FLUIDS Previous Question Paper (November/December - 2017 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Define Resilience.
Answer
Resilience is defined as the capacity of a material to absorb energy when it is deformed elastically and then, upon unloading, to have this energy recovered. It is quantified by the modulus of resilience, which represents the maximum strain energy per unit volume that can be stored in a material without undergoing permanent (plastic) deformation.
State Hook’s law and draw stress-strain curve for mild steel material.
Answer
Hooke's Law states that within the limit of proportionality, the stress applied to a material is directly proportional to the strain produced in it. Mathematically, this is expressed as:
where σ is the stress, ε is the strain, and E is the Young's modulus of elasticity. The stress-strain curve for mild steel is characterized by several distinct regions: the proportional limit, the elastic limit, the upper and lower yield points, the strain hardening region, and the ultimate tensile strength point, ending at the fracture point. The curve begins with a linear elastic portion, followed by a yield plateau where strain increases with little to no increase in stress, then a region of strain hardening where the material regains strength, and finally a necking region leading to failure.

A surveyors steel tape 30m long has a cross section of 15mm × 0.75mm with this, line AB is measured as 150m. If force applied during measurement is 100 N more than the force applied at the time of calibration, what is the actual length of the line? Take modulus of the elasticity for steel as 200 kN/mm2.
