Answer PaperPaper Code: 133BFMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

Answer all questions. Each carries 2 or 3 marks.

1.a

What do you mean by a Lateral strain?

2 marks

Answer

Lateral strain is defined as the ratio of the change in lateral dimension (such as width, depth, or diameter) of a body to its original lateral dimension when subjected to an axial load. It occurs in the direction perpendicular to the applied force and is related to longitudinal strain through Poisson's ratio.

1.b

What is poison’s ratio and write their units?

3 marks

Answer

Poisson's ratio is defined as the ratio of lateral strain to the longitudinal strain for a material subjected to uniaxial loading within its elastic limit. It is denoted by the Greek letter ν (nu) or 1/m.

ν = - (εlateral / εlongitudinal)

Since Poisson's ratio is a ratio of two strains, which are both dimensionless quantities (change in length divided by original length), it is a dimensionless quantity and has no units.
