State and explain Zeroth law of thermodynamics and discuss its important applications.

7 marks

Answer

The Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics states that if two systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third system, then they are in thermal equilibrium with each other. This law provides the fundamental basis for the measurement of temperature.

When two systems are in thermal equilibrium, there is no net exchange of heat between them, implying they share the same temperature. By utilizing a third system, such as a thermometer, we can compare the temperatures of two bodies without bringing them into direct contact. The primary application of this law is the construction and calibration of temperature-measuring devices, such as mercury-in-glass thermometers, thermocouples, and resistance thermometers, which rely on the principle that if the thermometer indicates the same reading for two different systems, those systems are at the same temperature.

To a closed system, 150 kJ of work is supplied. The initial volume is 0.6 m3 and pressure of the system changes as

p = 8 - 4V
, where p is in bar and V in m3. Determine the final volume and pressure of the system. Comment on the results.

Answer

Given: Work supplied to the system

W = -150 kJ
(negative because work is done on the system), initial volume
V1 = 0.6 m3
, and pressure relation
p = 8 - 4V
(bar). Converting pressure to kPa:
p = 800 - 400V
(kPa).

The work done in a closed system is given by the integral of pressure with respect to volume:

W = ∫ p dV = ∫ (800 - 400V) dV

Integrating from

V1 = 0.6
to
V2
:

-150 = [800V - 200V2] from 0.6 to V2
-150 = (800V2 - 200V22) - (800(0.6) - 200(0.6)2)
-150 = 800V2 - 200V22 - (480 - 72)
-150 = 800V2 - 200V22 - 408
200V22 - 800V2 + 258 = 0

Solving this quadratic equation using the formula

V2 = [-b ± √(b2 - 4ac)] / 2a
:

V2 = [800 ± √(640000 - 206400)] / 400
V2 = [800 ± 658.48] / 400

The two possible values for

V2
are
3.646 m3
or
0.354 m3
. Since work is supplied (compression), the volume must decrease from the initial
0.6 m3
, so
V2 = 0.354 m3
.

Calculating final pressure:

p2 = 8 - 4(0.354) = 6.584 bar

The system undergoes compression, resulting in a decrease in volume and an increase in pressure, which is consistent with the work being done on the system.
