JNTU B.Tech II MECHANICS OF FLUIDS Previous Question Paper (April/May - 2023 - R15)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Define capillarity and surface tension.
Answer
Surface tension is the property of a liquid surface that allows it to resist an external force, caused by the cohesive forces between liquid molecules at the interface. It is defined as the tensile force acting on the surface of a liquid per unit length, typically expressed in units of N/m.
Capillarity is the phenomenon of a liquid rising or falling in a narrow tube (capillary tube) relative to the surrounding liquid level. This occurs due to the combined effects of surface tension, cohesion, and adhesion between the liquid and the tube wall.
If the pressure at a point below the sea is 137.7 KN/m2 what is the pressure 30m below this point. Specific weight of ocean water is 10.06 KN/m2?
Answer
To find the pressure at a depth of 30m below the initial point, we use the hydrostatic pressure variation formula:
Given:
- Initial pressure (P₁) = 137.7 kN/m²
- Depth difference (h) = 30 m
- Specific weight of ocean water (w = ρg) = 10.06 kN/m³
Substituting the values into the formula:
The pressure 30m below the initial point is 439.5 kN/m².
