JNTU B.Tech II MECHANICS OF FLUIDS Previous Question Paper (December - 2017 - R13)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.
Part A
Define Metacenter.
Answer
The Metacenter is the point about which a floating body starts oscillating when it is given a small angular displacement. It is defined as the point of intersection between the vertical line passing through the new center of buoyancy and the original vertical axis of the body.
What do you understand by total pressure and center of pressure?
Answer
Total pressure is the total force exerted by a static fluid on a surface, either plane or curved, when the fluid comes in contact with the surface. The center of pressure is the point of application of this resultant total pressure force on the surface.

A U-tube differential manometer connects two pressure pipes A and B. Pipe A contains carbon tetrachloride having a specific gravity 1.594 under a pressure of 11.772 N/cm2 and pipe B contains oil of sp. gr. 0.8 under a pressure of 11.772 N/cm2. The pipe A lies 2.5 m above pipe B. Find the difference of pressure measured by mercury as fluid filling U-tube.

A pipe line carrying oil of specific gravity 0.8, changes in diameter from 300 mm at a position A to 500 mm diameter to a position B which is 5m at a higher level. If the pressures at A and B are 19.62 N/cm2 and 14.91 N/cm2 respectively, and the discharge is 150 liters/s, determine the loss of head and direction of flow.

A pipe of diameter 300 mm and length 1000 m connects two reservoirs, having difference of water levels as 15 m. Determine the discharge through the pipe. If an additional pipe of diameter 300 mm and length 600 m is attached to the last 600 m length of the existing pipe, find the increase in the discharge. Take f=0.02 and neglect minor losses.
