Explain how vacuum pressure can be measured with the help of a U-tube manometer.

5 marks

Answer

A U-tube manometer measures vacuum pressure by connecting one limb to the point where the pressure is to be measured, while the other limb remains open to the atmosphere. When the pressure at the point is below atmospheric, the liquid in the limb connected to the point rises above the level in the open limb. If the initial level of the manometer liquid is at the same height in both limbs, the vacuum pressure is calculated as the product of the specific weight of the manometer liquid and the difference in height between the two limbs. The formula is

P = -ρgh
where ρ is the density of the manometer liquid, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the difference in height of the liquid columns.

b

Find the pressure inside a water droplet of diameter 0.03mm, if the surface tension of water is 0.075N/m.

5 marks

Answer

For a water droplet, the pressure intensity is given by the formula

P = 4σ / d
where σ is the surface tension and d is the diameter. Given σ = 0.075 N/m and d = 0.03 mm = 0.00003 m, substituting these values yields
P = (4 × 0.075) / 0.00003 = 10,000 N/m²
. Thus, the pressure inside the droplet is 10 kPa.
