a

What is well-conditioned triangle?

2 marks

Answer

A well-conditioned triangle is one in which no angle is less than 30° and no angle is greater than 120°. Such triangles are preferred in surveying because they minimize errors in plotting and calculation, ensuring higher precision.

b

Convert the following quadrantal bearing to whole circle bearing: i) S37°55'E ii) S49°20'W iii) N80°15'W

3 marks

Answer

The conversions from Quadrantal Bearing (QB) to Whole Circle Bearing (WCB) are as follows:

  1. S37°55'E (Second Quadrant): WCB = 180° - 37°55' = 142°05'
  2. S49°20'W (Third Quadrant): WCB = 180° + 49°20' = 229°20'
  3. N80°15'W (Fourth Quadrant): WCB = 360° - 80°15' = 279°45'
c

The following staff readings were taken with a level: 2.665, 3.745, 3.830, 2.275, 2.645, 0.385, 0.960, 1.640, 2.845, 3.845, 2.680 and 3.265m. The instrument was shifted after the 4th, 7th and 10th reading. The first reading was taken on a Bench mark with R.L. of 100.00 m. Enter the reading in the form of a level book page. Find the R.L. of stations and apply usual checks.

In running Fly levels from a BM of RL 250m, the following readings were obtained: Backsight: 1.315, 2.035, 1.980, 2.625; Foresight: 1.150, 3.450, 2.255. From the last position of the instrument, five pegs at 20m interval are to be set out on a uniform rising gradient of 1 in 40. The first is to have an R.L. of 247.245m. Work out the staff readings required for setting the tops of the pegs on the given gradient.

A new control station F is to be established from existing co-ordinated points of triangle station T and D. The horizontal clockwise angles at T and D have been observed as angle DTF to be 44°52'36" and angle TDF to be 284°26'38". Calculate the co-ordinates of station F given that co-ordinates of T are 3931.82 m East, 7491.98m North and of D are 2959.39 m East and 7487.09 m North.
