B.Tech | II | I | R13 | November/December - 2017

Answer PaperPaper Code: 113BHMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define density and specific gravity.

2 marks

Answer

Density is defined as the mass per unit volume of a substance, expressed as ρ = m/V. Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance (usually water at 4°C) at a specified temperature.

b

Write the differences between weight percent and volumetric percent.

3 marks

Answer

Weight percent represents the mass of a component divided by the total mass of the mixture, multiplied by 100. Volumetric percent represents the volume of a component divided by the total volume of the mixture, multiplied by 100. Weight percent is independent of temperature, whereas volumetric percent is temperature-dependent due to thermal expansion or contraction.

A solution of sodium carbonate is causticized by the addition of partly slaked commercial lime. The lime contains only calcium carbonate as an impurity. A small amount of caustic soda is in the original solution. The mass obtained from the causticization has the following analysis: CaCO3-13.48%, Ca(OH)2-0.28, Na2CO3-0.61, NaOH-10.36, H2O-75.27 (Total 100%).

Data: NaOH=0.594%, Na2CO3=14.88%, H2O=84.53 Total=100%. The following items are desired:

  • a) The weight of lime charged per 100 lb of the causticized mass, and the composition of the lime
  • b) The weight of the alkaline liquor charged per 100 lb of the causticized mass, and the composition of the alkaline liquor.
  • c) The reacting material that is present in excess and its percentage excess
  • d) The degree of completion of the reaction
