By electrolyzing a mixed brine a mixture of gases is obtained at the cathode having the following percentage composition by weight: Cl2 – 67, Br2 – 28, O2 - 5. Using the ideal gas law, calculate:

15 marks
a

Composition of the gas by volume

5 marks

Answer

To find the composition by volume, we first calculate the moles of each component in 100 g of the mixture. The molecular weights are Cl2 = 71, Br2 = 160, and O2 = 32.

  1. Moles of Cl2 = 67 / 71 = 0.9437 mol
  2. Moles of Br2 = 28 / 160 = 0.1750 mol
  3. Moles of O2 = 5 / 32 = 0.1563 mol
  4. Total moles = 0.9437 + 0.1750 + 0.1563 = 1.2750 mol

Volume percentage is equal to mole percentage:

  • Cl2: (0.9437 / 1.2750) × 100 = 74.02%
  • Br2: (0.1750 / 1.2750) × 100 = 13.73%
  • O2: (0.1563 / 1.2750) × 100 = 12.25%

b

Density of the mixture in grams per litre at 250C and 740 mm of Hg pressure

5 marks

Answer

Using the ideal gas law, density ρ = (P × Mavg) / (R × T). First, calculate the average molecular weight (Mavg) of the mixture:

Mavg = Total mass / Total moles = 100 g / 1.2750 mol = 78.43 g/mol

Given conditions: P = 740 / 760 = 0.9737 atm, T = 25 + 273.15 = 298.15 K, R = 0.08206 L·atm/(mol·K).

ρ = (0.9737 × 78.43) / (0.08206 × 298.15) = 76.36 / 24.46 = 3.122 g/L
c

The spent acid from a nitrating process contains 33 % H2SO4, 36 % HNO3, and H2O by weight. This acid is to be strengthened by addition of concentrated sulfuric acid containing 95% H2SO4, and concentrated nitric acid containing 78% HNO3. The strengthened mixed acid is to contain 40 % H2SO4 and 43% HNO3. Calculate the quantities of spent and concentrated acids that should be mixed together to yield 1500 lb of the desired mixed acid.
