a

Magnetic meridian and True meridian

5 marks

Answer

The True Meridian is the line passing through a point on the earth's surface and the geographic North and South Poles. It is a fixed reference line that does not change over time. The Magnetic Meridian is the direction indicated by a freely suspended, balanced magnetic needle unaffected by local attraction. Unlike the true meridian, the magnetic meridian changes position over time due to the earth's shifting magnetic field and is influenced by local magnetic disturbances.

b

Whole-circle bearing and Reduced bearing.

5 marks

Answer

The Whole-Circle Bearing (WCB) is the horizontal angle measured clockwise from the magnetic north towards the line, ranging from 0° to 360°. It is always measured in a clockwise direction. The Reduced Bearing (RB), also known as Quadrantal Bearing, is measured clockwise or counter-clockwise from the nearest north or south meridian. It ranges from 0° to 90° and is always accompanied by the quadrant designation (e.g., N 30° E or S 45° W).
