What are the applications of E- commerce?
Answer
E-commerce applications span across various sectors, transforming how businesses and consumers interact. Key applications include:
- Retail and Wholesale: The most prominent application, allowing businesses to sell goods directly to consumers (B2C) or other businesses (B2B) through online storefronts, reducing overhead costs and expanding market reach.
- Online Banking and Financial Services: Enables customers to perform transactions, manage accounts, and access investment services securely over the internet, significantly reducing the need for physical branch visits.
- Online Marketing and Advertising: Utilizes digital platforms for targeted promotions, search engine marketing, and social media advertising to reach specific demographics more effectively than traditional media.
- Supply Chain Management: Facilitates real-time tracking of inventory, automated procurement, and seamless communication between suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors, improving operational efficiency.
- Online Travel and Tourism: Allows users to research, compare, and book flights, hotels, and holiday packages directly, providing convenience and dynamic pricing options.
What are smart cards?
Answer
A smart card is a plastic card, typically the size of a credit card, embedded with an integrated circuit chip that can process, store, and transmit data. Unlike magnetic stripe cards, which only store static information, smart cards contain a microprocessor or memory chip that allows for secure data manipulation and authentication.
Key characteristics include:
- Security: The chip supports encryption and digital signatures, making it highly resistant to fraud and unauthorized access.
- Storage Capacity: It can hold significantly more data than magnetic stripes, including personal identification, biometric data, and financial balances.
- Versatility: Smart cards can be used for various applications such as electronic payments, secure access control, healthcare records, and digital identity verification.
- Types: They are categorized into contact cards, which require physical insertion into a reader, and contactless cards, which use radio frequency identification (RFID) or near-field communication (NFC) to communicate wirelessly.
