1

Define the term Research. Explain the nature, scope and importance of research in Pharma.D.

14 marks

Answer

Research is a systematic, objective, and organized process of inquiry designed to discover new facts, verify existing knowledge, or develop new theories through the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data.

The nature of research is characterized by being empirical, logical, cyclical, and analytical. It relies on direct observation or experimentation, follows a structured methodology to minimize bias, and aims to provide evidence-based conclusions that are replicable and generalizable.

The scope of research in Pharma.D covers a wide spectrum including:

  • Clinical trials and drug development phases.
  • Pharmacovigilance and post-marketing surveillance to monitor drug safety.
  • Pharmacoeconomic evaluations to assess cost-effectiveness of therapies.
  • Pharmacoepidemiology to study drug utilization patterns in populations.
  • Evidence-based practice to optimize patient-specific therapeutic outcomes.

The importance of research for a Pharm.D professional is critical for the following reasons:

  • Clinical Decision Making: It provides the scientific foundation for selecting the safest and most effective drug regimens for patients.
  • Patient Safety: Research enables the identification of adverse drug reactions and drug-drug interactions that might not be apparent during initial clinical trials.
  • Professional Advancement: It empowers pharmacists to contribute to the healthcare team as researchers, bridging the gap between laboratory science and bedside patient care.
  • Continuous Learning: It fosters a culture of lifelong learning, allowing pharmacists to interpret and apply rapidly evolving medical literature to clinical practice.
  • Public Health Impact: Through research, pharmacists can address public health challenges, such as antibiotic resistance or medication non-adherence, by implementing data-driven interventions.
2

When do you follow the sampling technique? Explain various sampling techniques.

14 marks

Answer

Sampling is the process of selecting a representative subset of individuals or items from a larger population to estimate characteristics of the whole. It is followed when the population is too large to be studied in its entirety, when time and financial resources are limited, or when the study process is destructive, making a census impractical.

Sampling techniques are broadly classified into two categories: Probability and Non-probability sampling.

1. Probability Sampling (Random Sampling): Every member of the population has a known, non-zero chance of being selected, which minimizes bias and allows for statistical inference.

  • Simple Random Sampling: Every individual has an equal probability of selection. Techniques include using a random number table or lottery method.
  • Systematic Sampling: Selecting every k-th individual from a list, where k is the sampling interval calculated as N/n (population size divided by sample size).
  • Stratified Random Sampling: The population is divided into homogeneous subgroups (strata) based on specific characteristics (e.g., age, gender), and random samples are drawn from each stratum to ensure representation.
  • Cluster Sampling: The population is divided into clusters (e.g., geographical areas or schools). Random clusters are selected, and all or some individuals within those clusters are studied.

2. Non-probability Sampling: Selection is based on subjective judgment rather than random chance. While faster and cheaper, it is prone to selection bias and cannot be used to generalize findings to the entire population with statistical confidence.

  • Convenience Sampling: Selecting subjects who are most easily accessible to the researcher.
  • Purposive (Judgmental) Sampling: The researcher selects participants based on specific criteria or expertise relevant to the study.
  • Quota Sampling: The population is divided into groups, and a fixed number of participants are selected from each group until a quota is met, regardless of random selection.
  • Snowball Sampling: Used for hard-to-reach populations; existing subjects recruit future subjects from among their acquaintances.
