Main
Calculate the mean and median for the following data:
| X | 10-20 | 20-30 | 30-40 | 40-50 | 50-60 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| F | 7 | 10 | 16 | 32 | 24 |
Answer
To calculate the mean and median for the grouped frequency distribution, we first determine the midpoints (x) and cumulative frequencies (cf).
| Class Interval | Frequency (f) | Midpoint (x) | fx | Cumulative Frequency (cf) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10-20 | 7 | 15 | 105 | 7 |
| 20-30 | 10 | 25 | 250 | 17 |
| 30-40 | 16 | 35 | 560 | 33 |
| 40-50 | 32 | 45 | 1440 | 65 |
| 50-60 | 24 | 55 | 1320 | 89 |
| Total | N = 89 | - | Σfx = 3675 | - |
1. Mean Calculation:
2. Median Calculation:
The median class is identified by the value N/2 = 89/2 = 44.5. The cumulative frequency just greater than 44.5 is 65, corresponding to the class interval 40-50.
Where L = 40, N/2 = 44.5, cf = 33 (cumulative frequency of the preceding class), f = 32 (frequency of the median class), and h = 10 (class width).
A company has appointed four sales man A, B, C and D and observed their sales in three seasons Winter, Monsoon and Summer, the following table reflects their performance (INR in lakhs):
| Seasons / Salesman | A | B | C | D |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | 28 | 29 | 21 | 32 |
| Monsoon | 26 | 28 | 29 | 29 |
| Summer | 36 | 36 | 21 | 35 |
Test whether salesman significantly differ in their performance and sales different between seasons.
Answer
To test whether the performance of salesmen and the sales across seasons differ significantly, we perform a Two-Way ANOVA without replication. Let the null hypotheses be: H01: There is no significant difference between the performance of salesmen. H02: There is no significant difference between the sales in different seasons.
Step 1: Calculate row totals (Seasons) and column totals (Salesmen):
| A | B | C | D | Row Total | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Winter | 28 | 29 | 21 | 32 | 110 |
| Monsoon | 26 | 28 | 29 | 29 | 112 |
| Summer | 36 | 36 | 21 | 35 | 128 |
| Col Total | 90 | 93 | 71 | 96 | Grand Total (G) = 350 |
Step 2: Calculate Correction Factor (CF):
Step 3: Calculate Sum of Squares (SS):
Total SS = Σx2 - CF = (282 + 292 + ... + 352) - 10220.83 = 10522 - 10220.83 = 301.17
SS (Rows/Seasons) = (1102 + 1122 + 1282) / 4 - 10220.83 = 41088 / 4 - 10220.83 = 51.17
SS (Columns/Salesmen) = (902 + 932 + 712 + 962) / 3 - 10220.83 = 31066 / 3 - 10220.83 = 134.50
SS (Error) = Total SS - SS(Rows) - SS(Columns) = 301.17 - 51.17 - 134.50 = 115.50
Step 4: ANOVA Table:
| Source | SS | df | MS | F-ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seasons | 51.17 | 2 | 25.585 | FR = 25.585 / 19.25 = 1.33 |
| Salesmen | 134.50 | 3 | 44.833 | FC = 44.833 / 19.25 = 2.33 |
| Error | 115.50 | 6 | 19.25 | |
| Total | 301.17 | 11 |
Step 5: Conclusion. For df(2,6), Fcrit at 5% is 5.14. For df(3,6), Fcrit at 5% is 4.76. Since calculated FR (1.33) < 5.14 and FC (2.33) < 4.76, we fail to reject H01 and H02. There is no significant difference in performance between salesmen or between seasons.
