Describe the importance of limit test in pharmaceutical substance.
Answer
Limit tests are quantitative or semi-quantitative tests designed to identify and control small quantities of impurities which are likely to be present in pharmaceutical substances. They ensure the purity of the drug by keeping the levels of toxic or undesirable substances within acceptable limits defined by pharmacopoeial standards.
Why nitric acid is used in limit test of chloride?
Answer
Nitric acid is added to the limit test of chloride to prevent the precipitation of other acid-soluble anions, such as carbonates, phosphates, and sulphates, which might otherwise interfere with the turbidity produced by silver chloride. It also provides an acidic medium necessary for the reaction between chloride ions and silver nitrate.
