Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define Time Constant of R-L circuit under transient conditions.

2 marks

Answer

The time constant of an R-L circuit is defined as the time required for the current to reach approximately 63.2% of its final steady-state value during growth, or to decay to approximately 36.8% of its initial value. It is given by the ratio of inductance to resistance: τ = L/R seconds.

b

How a charged capacitor behaves in initial condition?

3 marks

Answer

In its initial condition (at t = 0+), a charged capacitor acts as a voltage source equal to its initial voltage V₀. If the capacitor is initially uncharged, it behaves as a short circuit (zero voltage drop) at the instant of switching.
