Answer PaperPaper Code: 114DHMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.

Part A

125 marks
a

How transients are produced in an electric circuit?

2 marks

Answer

Transients are produced in an electric circuit due to the presence of energy storage elements (inductors and capacitors) when the circuit undergoes a sudden change in its state, such as switching operations or source variations. These elements cannot change their stored energy instantaneously, leading to a temporary transition period before the circuit reaches a new steady state.

b

Define time constant of RL circuit. Give expression.

3 marks

Answer

The time constant of an RL circuit is defined as the time taken for the current to reach approximately 63.2% of its maximum steady-state value during charging, or to decay to approximately 36.8% of its initial value during discharging. The expression is:

τ = L / R

where L is the inductance in Henries and R is the resistance in Ohms.
