Answer PaperPaper Code: 115ENMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Define Digital computer.

2 marks

Answer

A digital computer is a programmable electronic device that processes information represented in discrete numerical form, typically using the binary system. It performs arithmetic and logical operations on data according to a set of stored instructions, known as a program, to produce specific output results.

1b

What do you mean by an Interrupt?

3 marks

Answer

An interrupt is a signal sent by hardware or software to the processor indicating that an event needs immediate attention. When an interrupt occurs, the processor temporarily suspends its current execution flow, saves the state of the program, and jumps to a specific routine known as an Interrupt Service Routine (ISR) to handle the request.

Once the ISR completes the necessary task, the processor restores the saved state and resumes the original program from the point where it was interrupted. This mechanism allows the CPU to efficiently handle asynchronous events, such as I/O operations or hardware errors, without requiring the processor to constantly poll devices for status updates.
