PART - A
List the applications of Gauss’s law.
Answer
Gauss's Law is a fundamental principle in electromagnetics that relates the electric flux through a closed surface to the net charge enclosed by that surface. Its primary applications include:
- Determination of Electric Field Intensity: It is used to calculate the electric field intensity (E) for highly symmetric charge distributions, such as point charges, infinite line charges, infinite sheets of charge, and uniformly charged spherical shells. By choosing a suitable Gaussian surface, the integration of the electric flux becomes significantly simpler compared to using Coulomb's Law.
- Calculation of Charge Distribution: It allows for the determination of the total enclosed charge within a given volume if the electric field distribution is known at the boundary of that volume.
- Understanding Electrostatic Shielding: It helps in explaining the behavior of conductors in electrostatic equilibrium, where the electric field inside a conductor is zero, demonstrating that any net charge must reside entirely on the outer surface.
- Derivation of Maxwell's Equations: It serves as the integral form of the first of Maxwell's equations (Gauss's Law for electricity), which is essential for deriving the differential form: ∇ · D = ρᵥwhere D is the electric flux density and ρᵥ is the volume charge density.
Differentiate between co-axial capacitors and parallel plate capacitors.
Answer
The primary differences between a co-axial capacitor and a parallel plate capacitor lie in their geometric configuration, the distribution of the electric field, and the resulting capacitance formula.
- Geometric Configuration: A parallel plate capacitor consists of two flat, parallel conducting plates of area A separated by a distance d. In contrast, a co-axial capacitor consists of two concentric cylindrical conductors, an inner conductor of radius a and an outer cylindrical shell of radius b, separated by a dielectric medium.
- Electric Field Distribution: In a parallel plate capacitor, the electric field is assumed to be uniform between the plates (neglecting fringing effects). In a co-axial capacitor, the electric field is non-uniform and varies inversely with the radial distance r from the center axis.
- Capacitance Formulas: The expressions for capacitance are derived based on their respective geometries:
Where ε is the permittivity of the medium, A is the plate area, d is the separation distance, L is the length of the cylinder, and a and b are the inner and outer radii respectively.
