a

Derive the voltage gain of op amp Inverting amplifier and non-inverting amplifier.

10 marks

Answer

For an Inverting Amplifier, the non-inverting terminal is grounded (0V). By virtual ground concept, the inverting terminal is also at 0V. Applying Kirchhoff's Current Law at the inverting node:

(V_in - 0) / R_1 = (0 - V_out) / R_f

Solving for the gain A_v = V_out / V_in:

A_v = -R_f / R_1

For a Non-Inverting Amplifier, the input voltage V_in is applied directly to the non-inverting terminal. By virtual ground, the inverting terminal voltage is also V_in. The voltage at the inverting node is determined by the voltage divider formed by R_1 and R_f:

V_in = V_out * (R_1 / (R_1 + R_f))

Rearranging for the gain A_v = V_out / V_in:

A_v = 1 + (R_f / R_1)
b

Design an amplifier with a gain of -10 and input resistance equal to 10 KΩ using Op amp.

5 marks

Answer

To achieve a gain of -10, an inverting amplifier configuration is required. The gain formula is A_v = -R_f / R_1 = -10, which implies R_f = 10 * R_1. The input resistance of an inverting amplifier is equal to the input resistor R_1. Given the required input resistance of 10 KΩ:

  • Set R_1 = 10 KΩ
  • Calculate R_f = 10 * 10 KΩ = 100 KΩ

Thus, connect a 10 KΩ resistor at the input and a 100 KΩ feedback resistor between the output and the inverting terminal, with the non-inverting terminal connected to ground.
