B.Tech | II | I | R16 | November/December - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 133BGMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Part A is compulsory (25 Marks). Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit (50 Marks).

Part A

1
Answer all questions.
25 marks
a
Explain why grain boundaries look darker under the microscope, while the grains look brighter.
2 marks

Answer

Grain boundaries are regions of high atomic disorder and energy. During chemical etching, these regions react more rapidly than the grain interiors, creating small grooves or pits. Under a microscope, these grooves scatter incident light away from the objective lens, causing the boundaries to appear dark, while the flat grain surfaces reflect light back, appearing bright.

b
Draw the plane (100).
3 marks

Answer

The (100) plane in a cubic crystal system is a plane that intersects the x-axis at unit distance and is parallel to both the y and z axes. Visually, this represents one of the faces of the unit cell cube (e.g., the front, back, top, bottom, left, or right face).
