Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define modulus of elasticity and modulus of rigidity.

2 marks

Answer

Modulus of elasticity (Young's modulus, E) is the ratio of longitudinal stress to longitudinal strain within the elastic limit. Modulus of rigidity (Shear modulus, G) is the ratio of shear stress to shear strain within the elastic limit.

b

What is a bulk modulus? How is the bulk modulus related to Young’s modulus?

3 marks

Answer

Bulk modulus (K) is the ratio of direct stress (volumetric stress) to the corresponding volumetric strain. It is related to Young's modulus (E) and Poisson's ratio (μ) by the formula:

K = E / (3(1 - 2μ))
c

What is meant by shear force and bending moment? Represent them with an example.

A rod is 2 m long at a temperature of 100C. Find the expansion of the rod, when the temperature is raised to 800C. If this expansion is prevented, find the stress induced in the material of the rod. Take Young’s modulus as 200 GPa and α = 0.000012 per degree centigrade.

Two shafts of the same material and the same lengths are subjected to the same torque. If the first shaft is a solid circular section, and the second shaft is a hollow circular section, whose internal diameter is 2/3 of the outside diameter and the maximum shear stress developed in each shaft is the same, compare the weights of the two shafts.

A shaft consists of a steel rod of 100 mm diameter surrounded by a closely fitting brass tube firmly fixed in it. Find the outside diameter of the tube so that when a torque is applied to the composite shaft it will be shared equally by the two materials. Take modulus of rigidity, Gs = 80 GPa, and Gb = 40 GPa. If the torque is 17000 N-m, calculate the maximum shearing stress in each material and the angle of twist on a length of 5 m.
