a

Define one gram-moles of a substance. Give examples.

3 marks

Answer

One gram-mole of a substance is defined as the amount of that substance whose mass in grams is numerically equal to its molecular weight. For example, the molecular weight of oxygen (O2) is 32, so one gram-mole of oxygen is 32 grams. Similarly, one gram-mole of water (H2O) is 18 grams.

b

Explain the relation between mass and volume for gaseous substances.

5 marks

Answer

For gaseous substances, the relationship between mass and volume is governed by the Ideal Gas Law, expressed as:

PV = nRT

where P is pressure, V is volume, n is the number of moles (mass/molecular weight), R is the universal gas constant, and T is absolute temperature. Since n = m/M (where m is mass and M is molecular weight), the relationship becomes:

PV = (m/M)RT

At standard temperature and pressure (STP, 0°C and 1 atm), one gram-mole of any ideal gas occupies a molar volume of approximately 22.414 liters. Thus, the volume of a gas is directly proportional to its mass and temperature, and inversely proportional to its pressure.

The dry bulb temperature and dew point of ambient air were found to be 302 K and 291 K respectively. Barometer reads 100 kPa. Calculate: the absolute molal humidity, the absolute humidity, the % relative humidity, the % saturation, the humid heat and the humid volume. Data are: vapor pressure of water at 291 K = 2.0624 kPa and vapor pressure of water at 302 K = 4.004 kPa.

A two – stage dryer system handles 1000 kg/day of wet solids. A sample of wet solids containing 50% solids and 50% water are fed to the first dryer. From the first dryer, the product that comes out has 20% moisture. This is admitted to the second dryer from which the product coming out has 2% moisture. Calculate the % of original water that is removed in each dryer and final weight of the product.
