Main
Accuracy
Answer
Accuracy refers to the closeness of a measured value to the true or accepted reference value. It is a measure of the correctness of an analytical result. Accuracy is typically expressed in terms of absolute error or relative error. It is influenced by systematic errors, which cause a consistent deviation from the true value. Improving accuracy involves calibration of instruments, use of standard reference materials, and performing blank determinations to eliminate bias.
Precision
Answer
Precision describes the degree of agreement or reproducibility between replicate measurements of the same quantity. It indicates the random variation in a set of results and is independent of the true value. Precision is commonly expressed statistically using standard deviation, variance, or the coefficient of variation (relative standard deviation). High precision implies that repeated measurements yield very similar results, though these results may still be inaccurate if a systematic error is present.
