Answer PaperPaper Code: 244AAMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

1a

What are enantiomers? Give examples?

2 marks

Answer

Enantiomers are stereoisomers that are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. They possess identical physical and chemical properties in an achiral environment, but differ in their ability to rotate plane-polarized light in opposite directions.

Examples include D-glucose and L-glucose, or (+) lactic acid and (-) lactic acid.

1b

Define diastereomerism?

3 marks

Answer

Diastereomerism is a type of stereoisomerism where molecules have the same molecular formula and sequence of bonded atoms (constitution) but are not mirror images of each other. Unlike enantiomers, which are non-superimposable mirror images, diastereomers possess different physical and chemical properties, such as different melting points, boiling points, and solubility. This phenomenon typically occurs in compounds containing two or more chiral centers, where the configuration at one or more, but not all, of the chiral centers differs between the isomers.
