Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART- A

125 marks
a

What is meant by enantiomerism? Give the examples of enantiomers.

2 marks

Answer

Enantiomerism is a form of stereoisomerism where two molecules are non-superimposable mirror images of each other. These isomers are known as enantiomers. Examples include D-lactic acid and L-lactic acid, or the R and S configurations of glyceraldehyde.

b

Describe in detail about the Elements of symmetry. Give the suitable example for each.

3 marks

Answer

Elements of symmetry are geometric features that determine the chirality of a molecule:

  • Plane of symmetry (σ): An imaginary plane that divides a molecule into two mirror-image halves. Example: Meso-tartaric acid.
  • Center of symmetry (i): A point in the molecule such that any line drawn through it meets equivalent atoms at equal distances. Example: Trans-1,3-dichloro-cyclobutane.
  • Axis of symmetry (Cn): An imaginary line about which rotation by 360/n degrees results in an identical orientation. Example: Water molecule (C2 axis).
c

Explain the Conformational isomerism in Ethane.
