Part A
25 Marks
Define optical activity. Give example for meso compound.
Answer
Optical activity is the ability of a chiral molecule to rotate the plane of plane-polarized light. A meso compound is an optically inactive molecule that contains chiral centers but possesses an internal plane of symmetry; an example is meso-tartaric acid.
What is plane and axis of symmetry? Explain with example.
Answer
A plane of symmetry is an imaginary plane that divides a molecule into two mirror-image halves, such as in meso-tartaric acid. An axis of symmetry is an imaginary line about which rotation by 360/n degrees results in a structure indistinguishable from the original, such as the C2 axis in water.
What is Geometrical isomerism? Explain.
