Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Distinguish between natural response and forced response of an electrical circuit.

2 marks

Answer

The natural response is the behavior of a circuit due to the energy stored in its reactive elements (inductors and capacitors) without any external excitation. It is determined solely by the circuit's internal parameters and initial conditions, representing the transient part of the total solution.

The forced response is the behavior of a circuit resulting from the application of an external independent source (voltage or current). It is determined by the characteristics of the input signal and represents the steady-state part of the total solution.

1b

Find the Laplace transform of {t.sin 5t + 0.2π}

3 marks

Answer

To find the Laplace transform of f(t) = t sin(5t) + 0.2π, we use the linearity property and the frequency differentiation property of the Laplace transform.

First, the Laplace transform of a constant 0.2π is given by:

L{0.2π} = 0.2π / s

Next, for the term t sin(5t), we use the property L{t f(t)} = -d/ds [F(s)]. Knowing that L{sin(5t)} = 5 / (s² + 25), we differentiate:

L{t sin(5t)} = -d/ds [5 / (s² + 25)] = -[ (0 - 5(2s)) / (s² + 25)² ] = 10s / (s² + 25)²

Combining these results, the final Laplace transform is:

F(s) = 10s / (s² + 25)² + 0.2π / s
