Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

a

Give the solution for instantaneous current i(t) in a simple RL circuit without source. Take initial conditions i(0)=I0. Draw the response graph indicating the factors effecting the rate of decay.

2 marks

Answer

The instantaneous current in a source-free RL circuit is given by i(t) = I0e-(R/L)t. The response is an exponential decay curve starting at I0 and approaching zero as t increases. The rate of decay is determined by the time constant τ = L/R; a smaller τ leads to a faster decay, while a larger τ results in a slower decay.

b

Find the Laplace transform of {e-2t sin 5t + 0.2π }.

3 marks

Answer

Using the Laplace transform property L{e-atf(t)} = F(s+a) and the standard transform L{sin ωt} = ω/(s2+ω2), the transform of e-2t sin 5t is 5/((s+2)2+25). The constant 0.2π transforms to 0.2π/s. Thus, the total transform is 5/((s+2)2+25) + 0.2π/s.
