Part A

1a

Define time constant and write its significance.

2 marks

Answer

The time constant of a first-order linear circuit is defined as the time required for the response (such as voltage or current) to reach approximately 63.2% of its final steady-state value during a transient process. For an RL circuit, the time constant is

τ = L / R
, and for an RC circuit, it is
τ = RC
.

Its significance lies in determining the speed of the transient response; a smaller time constant indicates a faster transition to the steady state, while a larger time constant indicates a slower response. It effectively characterizes the duration of the transient period, as the circuit typically reaches a steady state after approximately 5 time constants.

1b

Draw the transient current growth and decay curves for an L-R circuit and find the time at which these currents are equal?

3 marks

Answer

In an L-R circuit, the growth of current is given by i(t) = (V/R)(1 - e-Rt/L) and the decay of current is given by i(t) = I0e-Rt/L. The growth curve starts at zero and rises exponentially to a steady-state value of V/R, while the decay curve starts at an initial current I0 and falls exponentially toward zero.

To find the time t when these currents are equal, we equate the two expressions:

(V/R)(1 - e-Rt/L) = I0e-Rt/L

Assuming the initial current I0 is equal to the steady-state current V/R, the equation simplifies to:

1 - e-Rt/L = e-Rt/L
1 = 2e-Rt/L
e-Rt/L = 0.5

Taking the natural logarithm on both sides:

-Rt/L = ln(0.5) = -0.693
t = 0.693(L/R)

Thus, the currents are equal at t = 0.693τ, where τ = L/R is the time constant of the circuit.
