Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
PART - A
Draw the functional block diagram of a computer system.
Answer
A computer system consists of three main functional units: the Central Processing Unit (CPU), Memory Unit, and Input/Output (I/O) Unit. These are interconnected by a system bus consisting of the Data Bus, Address Bus, and Control Bus. The CPU communicates with memory and I/O devices to process data and control system operations.
What is Instruction cycle? Explain.
Answer
An Instruction Cycle is the sequence of operations performed by the CPU to process a single instruction. It consists of the following phases:
- Fetch: The CPU fetches the instruction from memory using the Program Counter.
- Decode: The instruction is interpreted by the control unit to determine the required operation.
- Execute: The CPU performs the actual operation, such as arithmetic or data movement.
- Store/Write-back: The result is written back to memory or a register if necessary.
