JNTU B.Tech III DIGITAL SYSTEM DESIGN Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
PART - A
What is state reduction and what is the need for state reduction.
Answer
State reduction is the process of identifying and eliminating redundant states in a state transition table of a finite state machine (FSM) that exhibit identical behavior for all possible input sequences. Two states are considered equivalent if, for every input, they produce the same output and transition to the same or equivalent next states.
The need for state reduction is to minimize the number of flip-flops required to implement the sequential circuit. By reducing the number of states, the complexity of the combinational logic and the number of memory elements (flip-flops) are decreased, leading to a more efficient, cost-effective, and smaller hardware design.
Describe the capabilities and limitations of FSM.
Answer
A Finite State Machine (FSM) is a computational model capable of representing systems with a finite number of states, transitions, and inputs. Its capabilities include modeling sequential logic circuits, control units in processors, communication protocols, and pattern recognition systems where the output depends on both current inputs and past history.
The limitations of an FSM are primarily defined by its finite memory capacity. Because it has a fixed number of states, it cannot recognize languages that require infinite memory, such as non-regular languages (e.g., matching nested parentheses or counting an arbitrary number of items). Furthermore, as the complexity of the system increases, the number of states grows exponentially, leading to the state explosion problem, which makes the design, verification, and implementation of large-scale FSMs highly complex and resource-intensive.

Determine which of the machines with the following specifications is realizable with a finite number of states. If any machine is not realizable explain why.
A machine is to produce an output of 1 whenever the number of 1's in the input sequence, starting at t=1, exceeds the number of 0's. For example if the input is 01100111, the required output is 00100011.
