Answer PaperPaper Code: 114ADMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Why feed water is to be heated before feeding to the boiler?

2 marks

Answer

Heating feed water before it enters the boiler improves the overall thermal efficiency of the power plant, reduces thermal stress on the boiler metal due to temperature differences, and helps in de-aeration, which removes dissolved oxygen and prevents internal corrosion.

b

What is nuclear fusion? How does it different from nuclear fission?

3 marks

Answer

Nuclear fusion is the process where two light atomic nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy. It differs from nuclear fission, where a heavy nucleus splits into two or more smaller nuclei. Fusion requires extremely high temperatures and pressures, whereas fission is triggered by neutron bombardment.

A 500 m distributor fed from both ends F1 and F2 is loaded uniformly at the rate of 2.6 A/m run. The resistance of loop is 0.15 Ω/km. Determine the minimum voltage and the point where it occurs, if the feeding points F1 and F2 are maintained at 220 V and 215 V respectively. Also find the currents supplied from the feeding points F1 and F2.

b

A 1-phase distributor has a total resistance of 0.4Ω and a reactance of 0.3Ω. At the midpoint ‘A’, a current of 115A at 0.85 p.f lag and at the far end ‘B’, a current of 120A at 0.9 p.f lead is tapped. If the voltage at the midpoint is 230V, find the voltage at the supply end and also its phase angle with respect to voltage at the far end when the power factors are with reference to respective voltages at the load point.
