a

What is the need of Control rods in nuclear plants?

2 marks

Answer

Control rods are used in nuclear reactors to regulate the fission process by absorbing excess neutrons. By inserting or withdrawing these rods, the chain reaction rate is controlled, allowing for power adjustment or emergency shutdown of the reactor.

b

What is the function of economizer?

3 marks

Answer

The economizer is a heat exchanger that recovers heat from the flue gases leaving the boiler. It uses this heat to preheat the feedwater before it enters the boiler drum, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the steam power plant and reducing fuel consumption.

A 3-phase distribution system is shown in below figure 2. Power is supplied at ‘A’ at a line voltage of 11kV and balance loads of 25A per phase at 0.8 p.f lag and 35A per phase at 0.9 p.f lag are taken at B and C. The impedance of the feeders are ZAB = (5+j9)Ω, ZBC = (6+j10)Ω and ZCA = (4+j8)Ω. Calculate the voltages at B, C and D and the current in each branch. Load at mid point D of section BC is 10A at upf. Power factors are assumed with respect to voltage at ‘A’.
