Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

1.a

What is the function of a economiser?

2 marks

Answer

The primary function of an economiser in a thermal power plant is to recover heat from the flue gases leaving the boiler. It uses this waste heat to preheat the feedwater before it enters the boiler drum, thereby increasing the overall thermal efficiency of the plant and reducing fuel consumption.

1.b

Calculate the power output of a 92U 235 reactor if it takes 30 days to use up 2 kg of fuel? Given that energy released per fission is 200 MeV and Avogadro’s number = 6.023 × 10^26 per kilomole.

3 marks

Answer

To calculate the power output, first determine the number of atoms in 2 kg of U-235. The number of moles is 2 kg / 235 kg/kmol = 0.00851 kmol. The number of atoms is 0.00851 × 6.023 × 1026 = 5.125 × 1024 atoms.

The total energy released is the product of the number of atoms and the energy per fission: 5.125 × 1024 × 200 MeV = 1.025 × 1027 MeV. Converting this to Joules (1 MeV = 1.602 × 10-13 J), the total energy is 1.642 × 1014 J.

The time duration is 30 days = 30 × 24 × 3600 = 2.592 × 106 seconds. The power output is the total energy divided by time: 1.642 × 1014 J / 2.592 × 106 s = 63.35 MW.
