Draw the circuit diagram of a two input non-inverting type summing amplifier and derive the expression for the output voltage.

10 marks

Answer

A non-inverting summing amplifier is an operational amplifier configuration where multiple input voltages are applied to the non-inverting terminal through a resistor network, resulting in an output voltage that is proportional to the sum of the inputs.

The circuit consists of an op-amp with a feedback resistor Rf connected from the output to the inverting terminal, and a resistor R1 connected from the inverting terminal to ground. Two input voltages, V1 and V2, are connected to the non-inverting terminal via resistors R.

Vout = (1 + Rf/R1) * Vnon-inverting

Applying the Superposition Theorem at the non-inverting terminal, the voltage V+ is given by:

V+ = (V1 + V2) / 2

Substituting V+ into the non-inverting gain equation:

Vout = (1 + Rf/R1) * [(V1 + V2) / 2]

If we choose Rf = R1, the gain becomes 2, simplifying the expression to Vout = V1 + V2, which performs the direct summation of the input signals.

b

Write all the ideal characteristics of op-amp.

5 marks

Answer

The ideal characteristics of an operational amplifier define the theoretical performance limits used for circuit analysis:

  • Infinite Open-Loop Gain (AOL = ∞): Ensures the output voltage is perfectly proportional to the differential input.
  • Infinite Input Impedance (Zin = ∞): Prevents any current from flowing into the input terminals, meaning the op-amp does not load the source.
  • Zero Output Impedance (Zout = 0): Allows the op-amp to drive any load without a drop in output voltage.
  • Infinite Bandwidth (BW = ∞): The amplifier can process signals of any frequency with constant gain.
  • Infinite Common-Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR = ∞): The op-amp completely rejects any noise or signals common to both inputs.
  • Zero Offset Voltage (Vos = 0): When both inputs are at the same potential, the output is exactly zero.
  • Infinite Slew Rate: The output voltage can change instantaneously in response to input changes.
