Briefly explain the various types of IC packages. Mention the criteria for selecting an IC package.

8 marks

Answer

Integrated Circuit (IC) packages provide physical protection, heat dissipation, and electrical connection to the circuit board. Common types include:

  • Dual In-line Package (DIP): Features two parallel rows of pins for through-hole mounting on PCBs.
  • Small Outline Integrated Circuit (SOIC): A surface-mount package that is smaller than a DIP, ideal for space-constrained designs.
  • Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier (PLCC): A square package with J-shaped leads on all four sides, suitable for high-pin-count applications.
  • Ball Grid Array (BGA): Uses an array of solder balls on the underside instead of pins, offering high density and excellent thermal performance.

Selection criteria for an IC package include: 1) Pin Count: The number of I/O pins required by the circuit. 2) Thermal Dissipation: The package's ability to transfer heat away from the silicon die. 3) Mounting Technology: Whether through-hole or surface-mount assembly is required. 4) Size and Weight: Constraints imposed by the physical dimensions of the final product. 5) Cost and Reliability: The manufacturing cost versus the environmental robustness required.

Explain the concept of Virtual Ground and Virtual Source in detail.

7 marks

Answer

The concept of Virtual Ground is fundamental to the analysis of operational amplifiers in inverting configurations. When an op-amp is used with negative feedback, the high open-loop gain forces the differential input voltage (the difference between the non-inverting and inverting terminals) to be nearly zero. If the non-inverting terminal is connected to ground (0V), the inverting terminal is held at the same potential, effectively behaving as a ground point without being physically connected to it. This point can sink or source current without changing its potential.

A Virtual Source (or virtual supply) refers to a node in a circuit that maintains a constant voltage level relative to another node, acting as a stable reference point despite variations in load current. In specific op-amp circuits like the non-inverting amplifier, the inverting terminal tracks the input voltage applied to the non-inverting terminal. Because the op-amp forces the inverting terminal to follow the non-inverting input, the inverting terminal acts as a 'virtual' replica of the input source voltage, allowing the circuit to maintain high input impedance while providing the necessary feedback to stabilize the output.
