Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

1a

What is an level translator? Why is it used?

2 marks

Answer

A level translator is an electronic circuit designed to shift the DC voltage level of a signal from one reference point to another without altering the signal's information or waveform. It is primarily used in multistage direct-coupled amplifiers, such as operational amplifiers, to prevent the accumulation of DC bias levels across successive stages. By shifting the output of one stage back to a level suitable for the input of the next, it ensures that transistors remain in their active operating region and prevents signal clipping or saturation.

1b

Give the schematic symbol of op amp? And discuss the role of each terminal.

3 marks

Answer

The schematic symbol of an operational amplifier is a triangle with two input terminals on the left and one output terminal on the right. The top input is marked with a plus sign (+) representing the non-inverting input, and the bottom input is marked with a minus sign (-) representing the inverting input.

The role of each terminal is as follows:

  • Non-inverting input (+): A signal applied here produces an output signal in phase with the input.
  • Inverting input (-): A signal applied here produces an output signal 180 degrees out of phase with the input.
  • Output terminal: Provides the amplified signal, which is proportional to the difference between the voltages at the two input terminals.
  • Power supply terminals (V+ and V-): These terminals provide the necessary DC power to the internal circuitry of the op-amp to enable amplification.
