Anatomical terminology of body position, regional names, planes. What is the usefulness of defining one standard anatomical position?
Answer
The anatomical position is the standard reference position where the body is standing erect, facing forward, with arms at the sides and palms facing anteriorly. Regional terms divide the body into major areas: the axial region (head, neck, and trunk) and the appendicular region (limbs). Anatomical planes include the sagittal plane (dividing body into left and right), frontal/coronal plane (dividing into anterior and posterior), and transverse/horizontal plane (dividing into superior and inferior).
Defining a standard anatomical position is essential for medical and anatomical communication because it provides a universal, unambiguous frame of reference. Regardless of the actual physical orientation of a patient or cadaver, descriptions of locations (e.g., medial, lateral, superior, inferior) remain consistent, preventing confusion in clinical diagnosis, surgical procedures, and anatomical study.
Outline the function of cell with neat labeled diagram.
Answer
The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. Its primary functions include metabolism (energy production via mitochondria), protein synthesis (via ribosomes and endoplasmic reticulum), transport of substances across the plasma membrane, cell division for growth and repair, and communication via signaling molecules.
Diagram description: A typical animal cell includes a central nucleus containing chromatin and a nucleolus, surrounded by a nuclear envelope. The cytoplasm contains mitochondria (bean-shaped with cristae), rough endoplasmic reticulum (studded with ribosomes), smooth endoplasmic reticulum, a Golgi apparatus (stack of flattened sacs), lysosomes, and centrioles, all enclosed within a selectively permeable plasma membrane.
