Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

1a

Explain the concept of Inverter.

2 marks

Answer

An inverter, also known as a NOT gate, is a fundamental logic circuit that performs the logical inversion operation. It takes a single binary input and produces an output that is the logical complement of the input; if the input is logic 0 (low), the output is logic 1 (high), and vice versa.

Y = A'

In digital systems, it is commonly implemented using CMOS technology, where a PMOS transistor is connected to the supply voltage and an NMOS transistor is connected to ground, ensuring that the output is always driven to one of the two stable logic levels.

1b

Draw a 2 bit comparator circuit using 1 bit comparator circuit as basic module.

3 marks

Answer

A 2-bit comparator compares two 2-bit numbers A (A1A0) and B (B1B0). It can be constructed by cascading two 1-bit comparator modules. The most significant bit (MSB) comparator first checks A1 and B1. If A1 > B1 or A1 < B1, the output is determined immediately. If A1 = B1, the output is determined by the result of the least significant bit (LSB) comparator comparing A0 and B0.

The logic is implemented as follows:

  • Let the outputs of the MSB comparator be G1, L1, E1 and the LSB comparator be G0, L0, E0.
  • The final outputs (G, L, E) for the 2-bit comparator are:
  • G = G1 + (E1 · G0)
  • L = L1 + (E1 · L0)
  • E = E1 · E0

In this configuration, the equality output E1 of the MSB stage acts as an enable signal for the LSB stage, effectively passing the comparison result to the final output only if the higher-order bits are equal.
